Research the role and company
Make sure you are fully informed of the job role you have applied to. As ridiculous as it sounds many people turn up to interviews of jobs they have limited knowledge about. Research the company and its background. Companies like to know you’ve done your homework, it shows commitment and dedication to the job role. Mock Interview
Try and practice behavioural and situational interview questions that are likely to be asked. Prepare examples of leadership, effective communication and an achieving moment in your work life so far. Also be aware that some companies like to know what your plans are for your future career. Practice with a friend asking you these types of questions.
First Impressions
Yes, first impressions are very important when it comes to interview. Dress for the job you want. Wear appropriate clothes that fits well. A safe rule is to dress to the setting so you don’t stand out. Be punctual for your interview. Make sure you’re aware of where your interview is and the best route to take so you don’t arrive late. If required call ahead and ask for directions to the building. Take along with you extra copies of your CV and any other documentation you may need. It is better to be over prepared than under. When greeting your interviewer provide a firm handshake, make eye contact and a friendly smile. Make it clear that you appreciate the opportunity to interview but try not to get distracted with small talk.
Answering the Questions
When answering the interviewers questions make sure you carefully listen to what they are asking. Try and avoid going off on a tangent and if necessary confirm the question so you fully understand what you are answering. Take pauses when needed and avoid saying something unintentionally. When speaking try and keep in mind a positive tone and open body language to show you are confident in what you are discussing.
Believe You Have This
Even if you aren’t feeling entirely confident in the interview or your nerves are coming across try and act confident. Interviews want to believe in your capability for the job role. Make sure you know your CV back to front ad they will go through it with a fine tooth comb. If you don’t know an answer to a question then be honest and say you aren’t sure but are willing to learn further.
